What are the benefits of cod liver oil?
Möller’s CLO has been produced in Norway, with high quality ingredients, ever since Norwegian pharmacist Peter J. Möller revolutionised CLO production in 1854.
What are the omega-3 benefits of cod liver oil?
Möller’s CLO is rich in the omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA. DHA promotes brain and eye health, while EPA maintains normal heart function. Cod liver oil is made from the liver of the Northeast Arctic cod, which is harvested along the Norwegian coast at the end of winter. This cod liver is naturally rich in the long-chained polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, which are also found in oily fish, roe and some species of algae.
Studies indicate that DHA is involved in the development of the brain of the foetus and contributes to the normal functioning of the eyes and brain throughout life. Together with DHA, EPA is particularly important for maintaining a healthy heart. Beneficial effect is obtained with a daily intake of 250 mg of EPA and DHA.
What are the vitamin D, A and E benefits of cod liver oil?
Besides providing omega-3, Möller’s CLO is also rich in vitamin D. Vitamin D is important for the development of the skeletal system in children and for maintaining a strong bone structure throughout life. Vitamin D also helps to maintain a healthy immune system. The vitamin exists in several forms, of which the forms D2 and D3 are most common. D3 has been shown to be easiest absorbed and used in the body. The body can produce vitamin D itself, in the form of D3, when bare skin is exposed to direct sunlight. However, it can be challenging to get enough sunlight every day throughout the year, especially in the Northern Hemisphere with its longer winters. It is therefore important to obtain vitamin D through the diet and supplements such as Möller’s CLO.
One of the other benefits of Möller’s cod liver oil is that it also contains vitamin A and E. Vitamin A is particularly important for the skin and immune system and eyesight, whereas vitamin E is an important antioxidant that helps protect cells against free oxygen radicals.
How much CLO should you take?
The health benefits of Möller’s cod liver oil are many and when taken as part of a normal British diet, it can help to ensure adequate intake of important nutrients.
One teaspoon (5 ml) of cod liver oil a day is enough to cover the daily requirement for vitamin D for people between 2 and 75 years of age, while it also adds significant amounts of vitamin A and E.
The same teaspoon also contains 1.2 grams of omega-3 fatty acids, of which DHA accounts for 0.6 grams and EPA 0.4 grams.
